I graduated from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs and got my ministry degree at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. Since then, I have served churches in Virginia, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland and now, back to Colorado. I also did my summer internships with the U.S. Air Force where I met my husband, Steve, who is also a Presbyterian Minister.  When asked what my emphasis in preaching is, I would say, "That God loves you. God is with you." I never want to forget why we do what we do in the Church. The whole reason for being is to know God and help others to know God. Reminding one another of God's love and care and mercy and grace throughout human history and in our own lives, helps us to affirm that God continues to bring those things into our lives because our God has not changed, even though the world has. God's promise to love us and be with us until the end of time is still true.   CJ is a longtime Elder at EPC and a Commissioned Pastor of Denver Presbytery. He attended Fuller Seminary in Colorado Springs. His deep interest of the history of the early church often flavors his sermons. He strives to use the historical context of the scripture to add additional meaning and depth to his sermons. Mike is a graduate from Texas Christian University and has a master’s degree from Brite Divinity School. He also served for decades as a Contemporary Christian musician, touring the world and recording with Don Francisco and many other Christian artists. Along with preaching, Mike is an Elder in our Church, and also leads contemporary praise and worship in our services. His sermons and music are rooted in a deep faith in Christ and His grace, love and mercy to all peoples. Marilyn is a long time resident of Elizabeth, and recently retired from 25 years of teaching. She is an ordained Deacon and Elder, and truly loves serving others, and being a member of our church family. Marilyn is the communication hub of EPC, she may be able to answer your question, or put you in touch with someone who can. Clark is a Colorado born, Grammy Award winning producer/engineer and a master of the recording arts. Clark moved to Nashville in 1993 where he had the opportunity to work with the legendary Chet Atkins. During his time with Chet, Clark engineered “Jam Man” which won the Grammy for Best Country Instrumental in 1996. That success led to work with other top Nashville artists including Ray Stevens and Bryan White. Clark has been a musician and follower of Jesus his whole life. He’s also the proud owner of one of Chet’s guitars, which he sometimes plays when he rocks the house at EPC. DONNA WINCHELL, COMMUNICATIONS AND TECH ADMINISTRATOR Donna is a dedicated third-generation native of Colorado, having embraced the community of Elizabeth since she and her husband constructed their home here over 30 years ago. Following the passing of her husband in 2018, she was led to Elizabeth Presbyterian Church, where she found the unwavering support of a strong church family. Donna brings 35 years of management experience across Banking, Business Process Outsourcing, and Telecommunication operations to her current role. Her enthusiasm for technology and commitment to continuous learning have been instrumental in her support of church communications. She developed and maintains a comprehensive church database, serving as a vital resource for the congregational directory. Additionally, Donna collaborates closely with the worship team to facilitate weekly live-streaming services, develops worship service presentations utilizing ProPresenter software, and oversees the management of the church's website content. Outside of her church community, Donna enjoys quality time with her adult children, grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She also engages in reading, walking, and pursuing online courses. Patricia was born in San Francisco, CA. Her husband, Ed, was born in New Jersey. Ed was in the Navy for four years then went to work for AT&T Communication in San Francisco and Patricia worked for Southern Pacific Railroad. They were transferred to Denver, CO in 1993 and lived in Centennial for 9 years. Patricia and Ed both retired in 1998 and moved to Elizabeth in 2002. They have two children Nathaniel and Nicole. Nathaniel has four stepchildren and lives in Wyoming. Patricia enjoys their occasional sleepovers. Nicole and her daughter, Emma, live in Denver. Patricia also enjoys Nicole and Emma’s sleepovers, which happily can occur more often. Patricia has attended EPC since 2002 and volunteers in the church office. She supports printing and assembly of the weekly worship service documents and maintains multiple pieces of office equipment. Patricia tracks and orders supplies to assure the office runs smoothly and is instrumental in sorting incoming mail and correspondence. She is the point person for scheduling greeters for each service and defines communion server teams each month. Bring whatever joys or troubles are part of your life right now, bring an open heart, and you'll see you're not alone.  Elizabeth Presbyterian Church exists to help people meet and walk with Jesus in the three primary ways explained below. Once a person has accepted Christ as savior, the walk has only just begun. Walking alongside Jesus, we learn from him and we change to become more like him. We grow in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. We become more loving. We don't lose ourselves, we just become the person God wants us to be and, as it turns out, we become the person we always wanted to be. This is a journey we're all taking together, and each of us is at a different point along the path. Jesus is our guide. God loves everybody. Everybody. No matter who you are, what you do, what you wear, what you look like, or what baggage you're carrying around, Jesus loves you. And you are welcome in his house. We don't always do it perfectly like Jesus did, but we're committed to accepting everybody just as they are, and to loving and helping one another any way we can.  The more we are transformed into the likeness of Christ, and the more we are committed to one another in authentic community, the more we realize how great is God's love for all people and how much it hurts him to see his people in such desperate need. We believe in one God, eternal and loving, who reveals himself in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. HUMANKIND. We believe God created men and women to live in loving relationship with him and with one another, and that he calls us to demonstrate our love by obeying his commands. But through Adam's disobedience, the original sin, the human race became alienated from God. We all have inherited a sinful nature and live in a state of separation from God, unable to remedy our lost condition on our own. SALVATION. We believe that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God's plan – since the beginning – to reconcile a lost world to himself. Through acceptance of Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, confession of our sins, repentance and commitment to a new life in Christ, we are forgiven and forever restored in loving relationship with our Creator. Salvation is achieved not by anything we do – not by our works – but by faith in Christ. It is a gift from God, made possible by Christ's work on the cross. THE CHURCH. We believe the Church is the living body of Christ, called to carry out his mission on the earth until he comes again. We are called to a life of sacrifice, manifesting his compassion and love to all who suffer. Jesus came to seek and save the lost, and so the Church is called to spread the good news of salvation, leading people to repent and accept him as Savior and Lord, and nurturing them in their faith. CHRIST'S RETURN. We believe that Christ is coming again. We believe God created the heavens and the earth and everything that lives. He is almighty, all knowing, ever present. He is holy and righteous, in him there is no imperfection. He has dominion and authority over all the earth. And yet he has made it known that he loves each and every one of his children with the deep, personal love of a father. - GOD THE SON. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, sent to redeem us from our sin. Born of a virgin and living a sinless life, he was fully man and fully God. To know what God is like, we need only to look at Jesus. By his teaching, by his miracles, wonders and signs, God revealed himself to us. And by his death on the cross he showed us God's amazing love. Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sin. He was crucified, dead and buried. But he rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God where he presides over his Church. By his resurrection, we have the assurance of God's victory over sin and death. - GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT. We believe God's reconciling activity in the world continues to this day through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit who confronts us with Christ's Lordship of life and calls us to repentance and obedience to the will of God. The Holy Spirit baptizes and seals us at the moment of salvation. Elizabeth Presbyterian Church is carefully and intentionally organized to fulfill its stated purpose: Helping people meet and walk with Jesus. Through prayerful consideration of the elected leadership of EPC, it has been discerned there are three main ways the church is called to fulfill its purpose. Together with the ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they are chosen by the people to exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church as well as the church at large. They serve faithfully as members of the session. Current Elders are: Mike Baggett, Allyn Bader Barclay, Barb Batt, John Bussie, Clark Hagan, and Marilyn Travis. **Deacons** - The office of deacon, as set forth in Scripture, is one of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment are chosen for this office. It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress, both within and beyond the community of faith. Below are brief descriptions of some of the ways we're working to help people meet and walk with Jesus in every stage of life and spiritual growth. The Journeymen group exists to engage the men of the church in life-changing fellowship with Christ, learning from him, and carrying out his purposes in our church, in our homes and in the world. The group meets weekly on Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. in the church office to pray and study God's Word, and talk about how it affects our lives. Following those meetings, the guys go out for breakfast, when possible, to continue in fellowship. Once a month, the Journeymen also cook and host a breakfast for the rest of the men of the church. This larger group is called the Elizabeth Presbyterian Men (EPM). This monthly meeting is for fellowship, as well, but it is also a business meeting to discuss the needs of the church and to assign work groups to accomplish whatever tasks are necessary. This is a self-funded group which has brought about many improvements to our buildings and grounds. For more information or to join either group, please contact John Bussie at [john.bussie@outlook.com](mailto:john.bussie@outlook.com).[](john.bussie@outlook.com) All women of the church are warmly invited to join the Elizabeth Presbyterian Women (EPW). The group offers fun and fellowship with a purpose. EPW supports missions such as Bethany Christian Services and spearheads the impactful Christmas Shoebox program. It offers assistance during memorial services and special celebrations by providing food upon request. The group supports a variety of church events, and engages in fundraising. One fundraising highlight is the annual bake sale in conjunction with the Chariots of Fire Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show, a beloved tradition that brings our community together. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM in the church. Your involvement can make a real difference in our community—come be a part of something special. It's all free. It's all fun. And it's all good. And on the last Tuesday of the month from 1 till 3 p.m. seniors (and younger folks) who like to knit are invited to gather with us for our Prayer Shawl Ministry. We knit shawls for people who are hurting. We pray for them. And we chat. What an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. The annual Chariots of Fire Car Show, the June Pie and Ice Cream Social and Faith Day at the Rockies are three great examples. But we also do our best to cater to the spiritual needs of the family – not just by providing Christian Education for the various age groups separately, but by creating ways to bring the family together around the Bible. EPC opens its doors each week for regular AA meetings to help people affected by alcohol abuse. *AA Book Meetings* are held each Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. These meetings are only for alcoholics who want to stop drinking and live normal, healthy lives. *AA Open Meetings* are on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. These are general meetings for anyone struggling with alcohol abuse, as well as friends and family, and anyone wishing to find out more about AA. The food bank is self sufficient; it does not rely on any government agency. Over its 30 plus years of operation it has relied only on the generosity of our community – the individuals, businesses, schools, civic organizations and churches of every denomination that have contributed all the food, money and volunteers necessary to meet the needs of struggling families. This service is available for anyone who lacks the resources to feed their families. Come to the back door of the house at 381 South Banner Street in Elizabeth during the hours listed above. There will be people there to help you. Financial contributions can be made by writing a check to Elizabeth Food Bank and mailing it to the address below. Food donations are welcome during normal Food Bank hours, or by calling Susan at 303-807-1900 to arrange another time. Kayuparu, which means "at his feet", is a Christian ministry for shoe shiners and their families in La Paz, Bolivia. Since 2005, Kayuparu has been reaching out to this group of street workers who mask themselves to avoid shame. Now the ministry is on the verge of planting a church among the shoe shiners so they will have a place to build a community that looks to Jesus as a solution to the sins, addictions, and challenges they have in common. A cooperative effort with other member churches of the Denver Presbytery to support the Network Coffeehouse. Located in the Capitol Hill area of Denver, the coffeehouse offers a place for homeless and mentally ill people to come in out of the cold and find Christ-like friendship over a hot cup of coffee. The ministry operates an orphan care center that is feeding, clothing and helping with school fees and medical care for about 500 orphans and vulnerable children in the Nyamashato region of northern Zimbabwe. If you're old enough, you remember the famous ad campaign when Oldsmobile – determined to shake the image that it built boring cars for sleepy seniors – announced that the 1990 Oldsmobile is "not your father's Oldsmobile." Well, not only did the campaign alienate its existing buyer base, it confused everyone else and, ultimately, sped up the demise of the Oldsmobile brand a decade later. Nowadays, if you own one of those pre-90s Oldsmobiles, like this two-tone 1955 Olds 88 Holiday Hardtop, you can actually win awards because it is very, very cool! This car, now owned by Scott Barber, won "Best In Show" in the 2023 Chariots of Fire Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show. Other winners included Christine Wolff for her 1941 Packard 180, Shane Ferris for his 1953 Ford F100, John Mott for his 1966 Chevelle SS, and Phil Wood for his 1996 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. What a show it was, with more than 65 vehicles ranging from a Lincoln Continental that was at least a mile long, to custom hot rods, totally beefy muscle cars and even a retired fire engine. And nearly $1,000 was raised to help Elizabeth area families in need. Great motor vehicles, great food, great music and great weather combined for a truly wonderful summer outing. The car that ran away with the show was a 1970 Excalibur, owned by Clark Hagan, which won 1st Place in the Classic Car category and took Best in Show overall. Other winners included a 1951 Willys Pickup owned by Neal Neubauer (1st Place Classic Trucks); a 1968 Chevy Camaro owned by Ben Harrison (1st Place Hot Rods); and a 1964 Sears Roebuck 250 cc Motorcycle owned by Mike Schroder (1st Place Motorcycles). Donations at the free BBQ lunch table totaled $1,371 which goes to the EPC Deacon fund for families in need in the community. Betty Jean Ruddock: She “didn’t have no money” but she had Jesus. At EPC, Betty is legend. She would show up at church most Sundays wearing her trademark flowered hat and her trademark smile, with her family in tow: daughter Carrie, son-in-law Joel and three grandkids. From a family of itinerant fruit pickers, you could just tell she’d worked hard all her life, been through a lot, and had a few stories to tell. Carrie’s poem about her puts it all into words. "Dick" Quick: "Well, Whatever's important." Anyone who knew Dick Quick knew he was a real character – with real character. His family describes him as a man with a strong sense of right and wrong, and an expectation that folks take responsibility for who they are and what they do. Whenever anyone ran afoul of these guidelines, he would say, “Well, whatever’s important!” And it was easy to see that the two most important things to Dick were his family and his church. He and Mary Ann (whom he called Bride) were here every Sunday, come what may. Even in his last months, they would be watching online, and we all knew they were with us. Mamie Wells: The Heart of a Nurse. The essence of Southern Charm. Just being around Mamie brought a smile to our faces. There was a sense of gentleness about her, a sense of dignity, contentment, assurance, and quiet beauty. Mamie’s life was dedicated to caring: for all the many members of her family throughout the years; for so many hurting people in her life’s work as a nurse; and for the congregation she loved here at EPC. One look from her, and you knew she cared about you. And you knew everything was going to be okay. The fruit of Mamie’s caring life is clearly witnessed in the recorded celebration of her life, viewable by clicking the link at left. They played "A Song for Mama" by Boyz II Men at Cheryl's memorial service, a song about what it was like to love and be loved by her. Cheryl was a mama to many, three by natural birth, and over 500 children as a foster mother. Then she adopted the last of her foster children and raised her as one of her own. Cheryl entered her rest just a month after her own mother, Helen Blem, passed into eternal glory (see below). And although we mourn their passing, seeing the many children and grandchildren who had passed through the doors of EPC so many times over the years, brought peace and hope to our hearts. HELEN BLEM: "A WALKING BIBLE, A SERVANT OF THE LORD" Seldom is there seen a person so humble, so grounded in Scripture, so ready to share her faith as Helen Blem. She spent her life serving the Lord and taking care of her family. Helen’s tenure at EPC spanned more than four decades. For many of those years, she led the Adult Sunday School class, and for the rest of those years she remained in the class, sharing her amazing knowledge of the Bible and never missing a Sunday. If there was ever a Bible Study, Helen was there. If there was ever a prayer meeting, she was there. Her prayers were mighty. Over the years, a growing number of grandchildren and great grandchildren filled the fourth pew on the right and came to be a part of our family. And what a blessing to see them all standing in line to testify as to her impact on their lives at the memorial service. To see the service, click the link at left. MARLENE REYNOLDS: “I’M DOING OKAY. I JUST TALK TO GOD EVERY DAY.” Steadfast, faithful, forever cheerful and positive, Marlene Reynolds was part of the lifeblood of EPC for many, many years. She and her husband Gil kept EPC working like a well-oiled machine, he making sure our buildings and grounds were always in top notch shape, she as office administrator, deaconess and so much more. After Gil passed away in 2014, Marlene continued her faithful involvement in all things EPC, even starting a support group for women who had lost their husbands. As her daughter-in-law Karen said in the memorial service, Marlene liked everything to be “just right.” And so things still are, because of the impact she made here. Pastor Carlyle was our beloved interim pastor from 2008 to 2010. Many memories of Carlyle still linger among the people of EPC, but his spirit is perhaps best reflected in the song, "This Little Light of Mine, I'm Gonna Let It Shine." Carlyle passed away during the pandemic, and his wonderful wife, Darlene, was finally able to have a memorial service for him in June of 2021 at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Castle Rock. Suzanne Craig: "We'll see ya when we see ya – grams" Suzanne Craig was a beloved member of our congregation known for her joyful nature (on fire for the Lord), taking love loaves of bread to new people in the neighborhood, and for tending the EPC garden with great care and affection -- among **many** other things. Suzanne went home to be with the Lord in March of 2020, and we weren't able to celebrate her life together because of COVID-19. But her daughter, Georganne Kinnunen, sent this memorial video. And it is a wonderful tribute to a life well lived. If you knew her at all, you will want to see this video. At EPC, we give 10% of our general offerings to missions working in our region and around the world [(click](https://www.elizabethpc.org/missions) [here](https://www.elizabethpc.org/missions) [for more on the missions we support)](https://www.elizabethpc.org/missions). We depend on God and your generous giving to make this happen in addition to covering the staffing and operating costs of EPC. There are four ways you can contribute to the work and ministries of EPC. Each way is spelled out below. You can give to EPC online, using your credit card or electronic transfers from your bank account. And you can do it safely and securely, through the Presbyterian Mission Exchange, a service of the Presbyterian Foundation. Just click on the MAKE A DONATION > button below and follow the simple, clear instructions for making a one-time or recurring gift. At the top of the form, you will need to select the fund to which you would like to donate. For most donations you should select the General Fund. If you wish to donate to the Special Project Fund or the Deacons Fund, you will need to make a separate transaction and select one of those funds. Every donation will be acknowledged by a receipt sent to your email address by the foundation. It is recommended that you save these email receipts for your tax records. Please note that the Presbyterian Foundation assesses a fee on all gifts to cover its reasonable and customary costs of operation. The fee can change, but it is currently set at 2%. There are no additional fees for debit or credit cards. The full amount of your online donations, as recorded in your email receipts, is tax deductible. However, the church will receive only that amount less applicable fees. So, on the statements you receive from the church, only the net amount will be shown. Finally, donations to our church made through the Presbyterian Foundation will not be included in the year-end giving statement you receive from our treasurer, as that would result in a double receipting of those online gifts. So please keep your email receipts from the Foundation and add them to your year-end giving statement when you do your taxes. Even though your donation to EPC isn't technically a "bill," you can still set it up to have your bank send one-time or recurring gifts to EPC. Here are some guidelines to help you get this set up with your bank. 1\. Follow the directions on your bank's website to set up a new bill or payee 2\. If given a choice, choose to pay a company rather than a person 3\. In the space for "Company Name" enter: Elizabeth Presbyterian Church 5\. In the space for "Company Phone Number" enter: 303-646-4825 6\. In the space for "Account Number" enter your first initial and your last name, for example: JBUSSIE 7\. After you have set up Elizabeth Presbyterian Church as a biller, it is added to your list of bills or payees and you can select it at any time and enter a payment amount and a payment date 8\. You will also have the option of setting up automatic or recurring payments (this adds greater convenience but is not recommended if there is a risk of overdrawing from your account) Bill Pay is usually a free service of your checking account, but some banks charge a monthly fee for their bill pay service which can be waived depending on account balance, etc. The church is not charged any fees for receiving a donation through your bank’s bill pay service, so what you donate is what will appear on your quarterly and annual giving statements. Generally, all donations are designated for the General Fund which covers the operating expenses of the church and which funds our 10% giving to the mission organizations we have partnered with as a church. If you wish to designate all or a portion of your donation in any other way, you can type instructions in the "note" section when setting up the payment. Options for designating include: •Deacons Fund (among other things, helps needy families in the church and in the community with utility bills, etc.) Yes. The church still accepts cash, though we recommend writing a check so our bookkeeper can send you statements and you can keep a record of your giving for tax purposes. When you write a check, it should be made out to Elizabeth Presbyterian Church.
